What Is a PAT Tester and Why Does It Matter?

A portable appliance tester (PAT tester) is a specialised piece of test equipment that performs the electrical safety tests required by AS/NZS 3760. It automatically applies the correct test voltages, measures earth continuity resistance, insulation resistance, and leakage current, and displays or records the results. The tester does the electrical measurement work for you, but the competent technician must know how to set up the tester correctly, interpret the results, and apply them in the context of the equipment being tested. Metrel MI3309 (DeltaPAT)

It supports Bluetooth connectivity and pairs with the Metrel aPAT app, allowing results to be recorded and managed directly on an Android device. The wireless print capability, when combined with a Zebra Bluetooth printer, allows technicians to print tags on the spot without connecting cables. Most PAT testers cannot directly connect to certain appliance types without adaptors. After completing the electrical tests, each appliance must have a tag attached. Training covers correct tag completion: what information must appear on the tag, how to calculate and record the retest due date, and how to apply the tag securely. RCD (Residual Current Device) Testing

AS/NZS 3760 also covers the testing of RCDs (safety switches) in certain workplace contexts. Three-phase testing uses different test parameters and requires a tester with three-phase capability. What Should You Bring to the Training?

You do not need to own a PAT tester to attend the course. We provide all testing equipment for use during the practical session. However, if you already own a PAT tester, you are strongly encouraged to bring it. Training on your own tester builds familiarity with the specific unit you will be using on the job and gives you the opportunity to get personalised guidance on its setup and operation from our trainers.
